Contemporary Artist Al Schwartz

“My artistic philosophy is that a successful non-representational, or abstract painting, speaks in a completely different language - one not definable by words or completely understood. It offers an emotional connection, a ‘felt sense’ encompassing an honest and natural truth. Whenever I create a new piece of art, I work to feel this truth, push myself, and reach a place where I can grow, discover, and ultimately share something new with the world in which I live.”

I was born and raised in the great PNW, where I studied fine art at Western Washington University. During that time, I also spent a year focusing on ceramics at the University of New
Mexico on the National Student Exchange. After graduating from WWU, I began my professional art career and shortly
after moved to Hawaii. There, I lived and worked in ‘Upcountry’ Maui as an artist for
over 20 years, creating in two and three-dimensional mediums, including
sculpture, ceramics, and paintings. In 2019, I relocated back to Bellingham, WA., to continue my art career in the Northwest.

Working as an artist for over 25 years, I’m pleased to say my art resides in a great number of public and private collections worldwide, including the State of Hawaii permanent collection in Honolulu. I’ve been represented by fine art galleries, including Lahaina Galleries, Paia Contemporary, and others throughout my career. Also, while on Maui, I was an artist in residence at the Four Seasons resort in Wailea for over 20 years. In addition, I’ve worked with several interior and hospitality designers on art projects for hotels and public spaces, participated in juried fine art exhibitions, and created numerous custom art commissions for private clients and large corporations.
